Thanksgiving

December 1, 2008

[Written by Elizabeth Leonardis for our old blog, So Civilized]

Antarctica is no exception, Thanksgiving was a huge feast here as it is everywhere. The cooks on station were working all week getting the dinner prepared in addition to feeding all 25 of us on a daily basis. Thanks Wendy and Russell, you guys are awesome! We all made pies the Wednesday before for a total of 20 pies for 25 people. Yes, we are still eating leftover pie.

After dinner it was time for a round of Kubb (pronounced Koob). Kubb is an old viking game that involves thowing sticks in an attempt to knock down the other teams pices of wood. It was still sunny and beautiful outside so it was a perfect way to spend the evening. Followed up with a game of Cities and Knights of Catan (all you gamers out there know what I’m talking about), it was a perfect end to a great Thanksgiving day. We actually celebrated on Friday instead of Thursday, but does it really matter? We are in Antarctica after all.

Elizabeth, I am amazed at the photos of people in shorts, thongs, and tee shirts!! I thought it was always freezing there even when it was sunny. Please explain.
I love reading your blog. Your life there is so fascinating. Thanksgiving looked like a wonderful celebration. It reminded me of all the times we celebrated with our friends overseas who became our family. 20 pies!!! It doesn’t get much better than that.
    Take care and stay safe.
    Love,
    Robin Brown

Is the guy chowing down on the turkey leg, Kevin, wearing a boy scout uniform?
