Last night we had a photography exhibition in the galley, courtesy of professional photographer Scott Sternbach who is currently at Palmer Station. He has been in Antarctica for the past 2 months documenting the “souls” of Antarctica. He uses this incredible 8×10 camera that he hauls in and around station and to the surrounding islands taking amazing photographs. Here is Scott’s description of the photographs that his camera takes, “It provides exquisite detail in pure black and white allowing the viewer to examine and enter into the scene, or in some cases, the lives of those being photgraphed. It tends to distill the subject and reveal the poetry of the place in a different way than when viewed in color.” He was able to print out scanned images of the negatives from the film that he has developed here on station. Like I’ve said before, we have everything we could possible need here including a dark room.
So the galley, normally our dining/lounge area, was transformed into a gallery. Those that set it up did a fabulous job and everyone loved the photographs. My photos don’t do them justice, but here is one that is directly from Scott. It was a really lovely evening and as Scott is leaving this week, it was nice to see all his work from his time here. We are all going to miss him.
